Letter to My Future Self
How has the new year been treating you so far?
Have you been thinking more about your relationship with yourself?
Like we've discussed the past two weeks, your relationship with yourself is perhaps THE most important relationship you have in your life.
Your past self needs forgiveness and gratitude. You present self needs your presence. She/he also needs your undivided attention, your love and compassion, and your grace.
This week I want to introduce something you may have never considered before: you have an opportunity to have a relationship with your future self.
Your future self is so wise. She knows all the answers. For this reason, you can let her be your mentor and teacher.
Today, I'm going to share with you a letter to my future self.
Dear Future Julia,
You know how all this is going to turn out and I know you aren't worried. All the little details I'm stressing about today seem insignificant to you. I know you're compassionate, but you probably wish that I wouldn't spend so much time worrying about the future.
What wisdom do you have to share with me? What can I let go of? What's holding me back that I can't see?
I know that most people use their past to determine what they're capable of in the present, but I choose to look to YOU for insight and direction.
Each morning, I'm going to connect with you. I'm counting on you to give me my next steps. You've seen how amazing my life will be, so I need your confidence and motivation to help pull me through all the times I want to quit.
What results have I created that I don't feel capable of yet? I'm so grateful that you are here to hold the belief that all my efforts will eventually pay off.
I'm not afraid to fail because I know you will be there to pick me up, dust me off, and push me forward again.
You are my safety net.
But the truth is, I'm also YOUR safety net because I'm totally going to hook you up! I'm going to take such good care of you! It's going to be amazing.
I'm want you to be healthy, so I'm going to exercise regularly and think about you before I overeat.
I want you to have abundance, so I'm going to pay off debt and save money for rainy days.
I want you to have freedom, so I'm going to do everything in my power to stay away from addiction.
I want you to have purpose and joy, so I'm going to work hard to make all our dreams a reality.
I love you so much and I'm grateful and excited that we get to work together now and forever.
Much love,
Julia
This was a fun letter for me to write. I challenge you to write a similar letter to your future self today. You might do this as a way of setting goals for this year. Make it a letter of encouragement, belief, and connection.
It will serve as a reminder to be courageous and mindful. It will help you make deliberate choices that will benefit you forever.
Your future self is kind of like a wise older sibling. And she/he needs to hear from you, so write that letter soon!
