Our brains are captivating storytellers. Their job is to keep us safe, physically and emotionally.
The brain's three main functions are to seek pleasure (the more immediate the better), avoid pain (in all forms), and conserve energy. If you ever wonder why you can't get yourself to follow through on your goals, one or more of these functions are likely the problem.
All day, every day, our brains go to work memorizing patterns, creating meaning, and making predictions. These come in the form of stories.
Why did that guy look at me weird? He must not like me.
Why was that test so hard? I must not be smart.
Why didn't I get that job? I'll probably never succeed in life.
Why did my teen just storm out of the room? I must be a terrible mom.
Because the brain is wired to look out for danger, 80-90% of our unconscious stories are NEGATIVE. That's not our fault, but it's something to be aware of.
Our unconscious brain is much like a toddler: it needs constant direction and supervision.
The thing we sometimes fail to realize is that our default thoughts AREN'T just true. They are simply the result of programming and thought patterns.
But ultimately, the thoughts we think over and over create our reality.
When you entertain a thought, your brain goes to work looking for evidence that it's true. Sadly, your brain (and mine) want to be "right" about their stories more than they want us to be happy.
Fortunately, we can override these thoughts and stories, and the first step is AWARENESS.
We need to identify what stories are running our lives, then question them.
Do I want that to be true for me? What if something else could be true? In what way has my brain made an unfair generalization? How is this thought keeping me stuck?
Over time, we can consciously choose thoughts and stories that are more aligned with the life and results we want in our lives.
But this doesn't happen overnight. It takes effort. It takes time. Often it takes someone else's guidance to uncover the stories that are running in the background of our subconscious and playing out in our lives.
