What Could Be Worse Than Failure?

Recently, one of my coaching clients faced a tough situation. She lost her dream job and was understandably upset.

While she wanted to find a new job, the thought of searching and applying felt daunting because of the uncertainty of success.

I completely understand her hesitation, especially knowing how our brains are wired. Our primitive brain believes the best outcome is success, and the second-best is not even trying.

It fears the idea of trying and not achieving the desired result, labeling this as failure.

But what if our brain is wrong?

What if not trying is actually the worst-case scenario every time?

When we avoid pursuing our goals due to fear of failure, we "fail ahead of time." In other words, we guarantee failure.

However, when we need a job, spending time searching and applying is the best use of our time.

For instance, the process of applying for jobs encourages personal growth. It requires us to update our resume, write letters of intent, and envision our future.

If we land an interview, regardless of the outcome, we gain familiarity with interview formats, build courage, and identify our strengths and weaknesses. The more interviews we attend, the better we become.

Similarly, some moms hesitate to meal plan and cook dinner because the meal might not turn out well, or the kids might not like it. But "might" is the key word here. The meal might also turn out great.

Success becomes more likely with practice. As my 10-year-old gymnast wisely says, "Practice makes progress." There's truly no arguing with that.

Be willing to invest effort into things that matter to you. Don't worry about achieving the perfect results right away.

Remember, you have to be bad at something before you can become good at it. Embrace a growth mindset.

While success is preferable, working towards a goal is the next best thing.

Most importantly, remember that not trying guarantees failure and will always be your WORST option.
