The Best Investment I've Ever Made
What has been the best investment you have ever made? Was it a wise real-estate purchase? A education savings fund for your child? Was it bitcoin or another form of cryptocurrency? Maybe it was in your physical health and improving your body composition and lab values.
Personally, investing in my BRAIN has been the best investment I have ever made.
This might surprise some of you. But the truth is, our unconscious brain runs the majority of our lives. It affects every thought we think, emotion we feel, and action we take.
Though I didn't realize it until I became an adult, I had mild to moderate mental health struggles as a child and teenager. In junior high and high school, I would get so anxious for big track meets that I couldn't sleep for part or ALL of the night before. I would get so sick to my stomach, I couldn't eat all day.
I was a perfectionist about many things and never felt like I was good enough. I had an eating disorder which I coined "exercise bulimia." (Not sure if that's an actual thing, but it was a challenge for me.)
As I became a mom, I attached my worth to lots of things I had no business attaching it to: how well my kids were behaving, how clean my house was, how well my pants fit, if I was a good cook, and how accomplished my kids/teens were.
In the past few years, I have done some significant work on many of my beliefs. It's been an experience similar to pulling out all the furniture and decorations from a large room and dusting and washing the walls. Then deciding intentionally what I'm going to put back.
Through working on my brain and beliefs, I've let go of lots of old beliefs and misconceptions that don't serve me anymore. On the other side of this investment, I've had more peace, experienced more joy, felt more connection, and lived more intentionally.
All my relationships are better, starting with my relationships with myself.
Did you know that, according to the world of psychology, the majority of our beliefs were established by the age of seven. Wouldn't it be a pity if we operated from those beliefs the rest of our lives without ever taking a look at them?
Can you imagine how poorly a phone or computer would function if it never got updated with the latest version of the applications?
Researchers used to believe that the brain was neuroplastic (the brain's ability to reorganize and rewire its neural connections) up to the age of about 25. But more recent studies show that the brain continues to maintain neuroplasticity throughout life.
That means if you aren't liking the results in your life; if your relationships aren't what you want them to be; if you're more anxious or depressed than feels healthy and normal; then your brain can REWIRE and CHANGE!
Starting TODAY!
This is the best news ever.
Personality isn't set. Habits aren't fixed. Trauma need not always define you.
So, invest in your brain, your mental and emotional health. Whatever that looks like--therapy, coaching, podcasts, books--I promise you won't regret it.
After all, the health of your brain impacts every second of every day of your life.
