The Sentence Running Your Life
We each have one major sentence or belief that is running our lives. For better or worse, we likely adopted this belief sometime in the first seven years of our lives.
The sentence might sound like:
I'm not good enough.
There's something wrong with me.
There's never enough....time, money, love, fun.
I'm never enough.
I'm not likable.
I'm not lovable (there's a difference).
People are jerks.
As you can see, these thoughts are often negative and discouraging.
What are your unconscious beliefs? What sentence is running your life? Can you relate to any of these?
For much of my life, I held onto the belief, "There's never enough money." This mindset limited my happiness and became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
And I'm still working on overcoming the belief, "There's never enough time/rest." I make it true everyday by giving myself a long to-do list and not getting enough sleep. Oops.
It's natural to have these negative sentences in our subconscious. However, with conscious effort and practice, we can gradually replace them with positive and hopeful beliefs, like:
Things always work out for me.
The universe is conspiring in my favor.
There's always room for one more (this was my mom's, and is probably why she had TEN kids!)
There will always be enough....time, money, love, fun.
I am divinely and guided protected.
I'm not for everyone, but that's okay.
People are innately good.
Changing these beliefs takes repetition and emotion. When we notice a negative thought, we can intentionally replace it with a more positive one.
Many of these thought aren't accessible right away. Sometimes we need a bridge thought like, "I'm opening up to the idea that could be lovable" or "Most people have good intentions."
By consistently challenging our subconscious beliefs with ones that serve us better--grounded in feelings of hope, confidence, certainty, and gratitude--the positive belief gradually becomes the one we live by.
This is powerful and transformative work.
